A nitrogen gas spring’s initial force is its charge pressure acting on the piston area (Force = Pressure × Area), giving very high force in a small cylinder.
As the rod is pushed in, the gas compresses and the force rises. Because the cylinder includes a gas reservoir (dead volume), the rise is gradual — typically about 1.3–1.8× the initial force at full rated stroke, not the runaway you would get from a reservoir-free model. The calculator estimates this with Boyle’s law including that reservoir.
Formula: Final Force = Initial Force × L₀ / (L₀ − Working Stroke), L₀ = stroke + reservoir
