As punches retract, the stock tends to cling to them. The stripper plate holds the strip down and pulls it free of the punches. Strippers can be fixed or spring-loaded (travelling), and spring strippers also guide the punches and hold the material flat during cutting.
Sizing stripper springs requires estimating the stripping force, which scales with the cut perimeter and material thickness.
