Galvanized Steel (A653)
Hot-dipped zinc coated steel. Coating weight (G-designation) determines corrosion resistance and formability. Zinc acts as a sacrificial anode to protect the base steel.
Reference properties
- Category: Steel
- Density: 0.284 lb/in³
- Yield strength: 33,000-50,000 psi
- Tensile strength: 45,000-65,000 psi
Available tempers and conditions
- G30 (Light) — 0.30 oz/ft²
- Thinnest coating. Best formability & weldability. Indoor use (appliances).
- G60 (Medium) — 0.60 oz/ft²
- Standard general purpose. Good balance of protection and formability.
- G90 (Heavy) — 0.90 oz/ft²
- Max outdoor protection. thicker zinc may flake in deep draws. 30-50% longer life than G60.
- Galvannealed (A40) — Heat Treated
- Zinc-Iron alloy coating. Matte grey. Excellent paint adhesion, harder surface.
The condition on the purchase order changes forming behavior as much as the alloy does. Galvanized Steel (A653) is stocked in 4 listed conditions; confirm which one the certification covers before committing die clearance, bend radius, or press tonnage.
Production use
As a steel product, Galvanized Steel (A653) should be compared against other grades in the same family before substituting — density drives coil and part weight, while the yield and tensile basis above drive forming load and springback.
Published families and nominal properties vary by grade, temper, thickness, processing history, and governing specification. Confirm the actual purchase specification and material certification before releasing a die, forming process, weld procedure, or production setup. Surface condition, grain direction, coating, work hardening, edge quality, and lot-to-lot variation can affect performance even when nominal strength values match.

Verification checklist
Verify units, thickness tolerance, yield and tensile basis, and any temperature or direction dependence. Run a representative trial when forming limits, safety, or high production volume make an incorrect assumption costly. This page is a reference, not a material certification or supplier guarantee.
