Thread Engagement Calculator

Find the minimum thread engagement length needed to develop full fastener strength in a given material.

Enough thread engagement develops the fastener’s full strength so the bolt breaks before the threads strip. Softer parent materials need more engagement than the fastener diameter.

Formula: Min engagement ≈ 1ר (steel) to 2ר (soft alloys)

Worked Example

  1. A 1/2 in bolt into steel: aim for about 0.5 in of engagement.
  2. Into aluminum, increase to roughly 0.75–1.0 in to avoid stripping.
