Shut Height

The distance between the press bed and ram at the bottom of the stroke; must match the die closed height.

What it means on the floor

Shut height is the distance from the top of the bolster to the bottom of the ram when the press is at the bottom of its stroke. The die’s closed height must be set to match it (using the press shut-height adjustment and parallels) so the die closes correctly without overloading.

Mismatched shut height either fails to fully form the part or crushes the tooling, so it is a first-check setup parameter.

Applying the term

Interpret Shut Height in the context of the drawing, governing standard, and customer requirement in front of you — the same word can carry different limits in design, quality, and production documents. Check whether a stated value is nominal, minimum, maximum, or reference-only, and whether it applies before forming, after forming, or after heat treatment.
