Punch Force
The force required to shear a slug or blank from sheet metal during piercing or blanking.
What it means on the floor
Punch force (cutting force) is what the press must deliver to push a punch through the stock. It equals the cut perimeter × material thickness × the material’s shear strength.
Peak punch force sets the tonnage rating you need from the press and drives tool stress. Grinding shear (rake) onto the punch or die spreads the cut over the stroke and can cut peak force by 25–50%.

Applying the term
Interpret Punch Force in the context of the drawing, governing standard, and customer requirement in front of you — the same word can carry different limits in design, quality, and production documents. Check whether a stated value is nominal, minimum, maximum, or reference-only, and whether it applies before forming, after forming, or after heat treatment.
