Galling

Adhesive wear where material transfers and seizes between the workpiece and tooling, scoring the part.

What it means on the floor

Galling happens when high pressure and sliding cause the sheet and tool to cold-weld microscopically, tearing metal loose and dragging scratches (score lines) on the part and the die. It is common in stainless and aluminum forming.

Better lubrication, harder or coated tooling, smoother die surfaces, and lower contact pressure all help suppress it.

Applying the term

Interpret Galling in the context of the drawing, governing standard, and customer requirement in front of you — the same word can carry different limits in design, quality, and production documents. Check whether a stated value is nominal, minimum, maximum, or reference-only, and whether it applies before forming, after forming, or after heat treatment.
