A sheared edge has a characteristic profile: rollover (the rounded entry), a smooth burnished band where the material was in contact with the cutting edge, a rougher fracture zone where it broke, and the burr at the exit.
The proportion of burnish to fracture is a direct readout of die clearance — more burnish means tighter clearance, more fracture means looser.
