In blanking, the punch shears a complete shape out of the strip, and the piece that falls through the die — the blank — is the part you keep. The surrounding web becomes scrap.
Blanking is contrasted with piercing, where the slug is the scrap and the strip is the part. Both share the same cutting mechanics and depend on correct die clearance.
